Still not sure whether you should go to university?
Ask yourself these five questions when making this all-too important decision!Do you need a degree? Some career paths don’t require a tertiary education for entry, so make sure you research your chosen path thoroughly to avoid wasting valuable time and money.
Are you just following your friends? Sure, all your friends are going to uni, but a FOMO isn’t a good enough reason to follow them there.
Have you thought about your alternatives? Going to uni isn’t your only option.
Do you even want to continue learning? You should go to university because you want to go, not because your parents are pressuring you. Remember: if you want to succeed at uni, your heart needs to be in it.
Are you ready to choose a career now? If you’re still unsure what you want to do, you could take a gap year or get a job. This will help you to figure out things in your own time and avoid making any rash career decisions you might later regret. Remember, it’s never too late to go to university – you don’t have to be fresh out of school to go.
Advantages
It opens new avenue of employment. Most top jobs are graduate jobs. There are certain jobs that require one to be knowledgeable regarding certain things like medicine , to become a doctor you need to study more than just the basics.
New life experiences. University is a place of self-reflection , it’s where you get tested at how you handle situations , the new experiences are exciting and meeting new people is always amazing , you get to blend in with different personalities.
Self- Improvement. You get to grow mentally and emotionally as you are far away from home , you obliged to be independent and face things alone , that helps strengthen you. You get to make your own choices and decisions.
Disadvantages
Universities are costly. You spend thousands studying but could end up getting no job. Not all of us were born with silver spoons in our mouths so we must think of the money before we decide if whether or not we are going to pursue our studies. The financial aid is not a guarantee most drop out because the financial aid can no longer pay for them.
Lack of practical experience. In University you spend 70% of your time studying big costly books without getting practical experience , if you get that experience it is of limited time.
Time lost. It consumes a lot of time. You spend 4 years studying for a degree solely focusing on it when you could be doing other beneficial things like running a business.
It is your choice, your decision. Make sure that you are doing something that will guarantee you a better life. If you don’t choose to go to Uni, do something else that’s positive like establish a business. Do some introspection before you choose. Don’t allow influence from family or friends to decide for you.
Be a bigger person and choose what might be right for you.
